THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG

From a Revolutionary War era sampling to Fenway Park

“Cool October Night” is a story told through the eyes of old tree that has watched generations of life unfold beneath its branches.

Under the moon’s reassuring light, the tree watched Boston grow from its earliest days, saw its character take shape and witnessed its people unite through shared traditions. When a powerful storm strikes the tree down, its story is far from over. Its wood travels from a Maine sawmill to Louisville, where it is transformed into a baseball bat that eventually finds its way home to Fenway Park—connecting the tree’s memories with the hope surrounding the Boston Red Sox and their historic 2004 championship.

At its heart, “Cool October Night” is an inspirational song about triumph born from loss and how the changing of the leaves creates a kindred spirit throughout the region.

I’m positively open now for the season

A bird just flew in from the rain

The familiar land

I love

The feeling when it’s raining

I’ll revere sunlight until it’s gone, and disappeared

To make a Cool October Night in Boston, Massachusetts, now

Bring an old New England feeling

Cooling in the night

Leaves are changing

Our Spirit feels the same thing

There’s a man on the moon feeling easy

You can see his face lit up right at the bone

When the wind that took me

Underneath the branches I was leaning

It’s as if he assured me

Always there’d be hearts with memories

To make a Cool October Night in Boston, Massachusetts, now

Bring an old New England feeling

Cooling in the night

Leaves are changing

Our Spirit feels the same thing

The day after the day after it all fell apart in front of me

I could hear the sawmill running up in Maine

I road 1000 miles to Louisville, defeated

But I knew that one day,

I’d be driving home a victory

To make a Cool October Night in Boston, Massachusetts, now

Bring an old New England feeling

Cooling in the night

Leaves were changing

Our Spirit feels the same thing
